Pretty Nostalgic Project
In this project our brief was to customise a garment for pretty nostalgic magazine. Pretty Nostalgic means bright, colourful, vintage, timeless pieces which could be up-cycled with a more modernised twist. Throughout my project I chose to explore the 1980s as I believe this was a decade where fashion was at its best. My theme is based on Versace from that decade as I was intrigued by the various, exuberant, wild patterns that were used.
My moodboard is based on 1980s Versace fashion. A moodboard is a collection of your idea's which should be associated with your final piece. My colour pallet has bright reds, yellows and blues, also black and gold as these were the colours inspired by my theme. On the background of my moodboard i designed a floral print which was also inspired by my theme. I put my images in a variety of places on my moodboard, the images I chose were mainly Versace clothes which was where I went wrong because that is what you put on a style board. Next time I will include more images linked with my theme and decade and less clothes. The patterns on my moodboard were mainly floral, Asian and swirls. While researching I found that the patterns used on the garments of my decade and theme are very vintage, they are still being used today if not similar but also with a modern twist.
My flat illustrations are also based on 1980s Versace fashion. A flat illustration is a 2D drawing of a garment that is not on a model. I drew different garments and used prints which are taken from my theme. The patterns on the garments are very over the top and bold which is what my theme is all about. My colour pallet consists of Black, Gold, Red, Green, Blue and Purple. These colours and patterns show how I have used my decade and theme as inspiration to re-design and up-cycle these garments I have produced.
My samples are small examples of work I have created. I have made a pocket, two fabric pattern samples, pleats and gathering. My gathering was an activity I found the most challenging to do because I had to use the over locker which I found difficult to use at first but I became more confident at using after continuously trying, it took me a number of attempts but I finally managed to make one. Also one of my fabric samples was taken from my final piece, on the sample I used fabric colours to show what my final piece looked like.
My digital moodboard was again based on my theme and decade. A digital moodboard is the same as a normal moodboard except it is done on a programme on the computer e.g. Photoshop. The images and colour pallet is taken from 1980s Versace but also Versace now. I found creating this was quite simple and easy to do.
My Applique and pattern sample are based on 1980s Versace fashion. An applique means applying both techniques of using bonding web and embroidery. A pattern sample is an example taken or inspired from your theme and decade. On my applique I used shapes and colours associated with my theme, I also used fabric which I put on my final piece. I have written about how I made it, what materials I have used, the characteristics of the materials and health and safety. On my pattern sample I have used key, eye catching prints taken mainly from my moodboard.
My model drawings and final piece picture are finally all based on 1980s Versace fashion. A model drawing is a drawing of your garment on a model to show the shape, front, back, pattern and close ups of the garment. I have also annotated my model drawing to show what materials I have customised it with. My final piece picture is a photo of the garment I have customised being worn to show all my ideas and work brought to life. The garment I chose to customise was a plain black pencil skirt which I painted and added material on to, this completed my work to show how clothing taken from my theme and decade can still be worn today to create a vintage party garment look based on our brief to create a party outfit for pretty nostalgic.
Q&A?
Explain what a mood-board is?
What do you include on a mood-board, 5 minimum examples?
What does pretty nostalgic mean to you?
- A moodboard is a collection of your idea's which should be associated with your final piece. On a moodboard you should include: images, fabrics, a theme, annotations and a colour palette. Pretty Nostalgic means patterned, bright colours used on silk, viscos and velvet to produce vintage, bold and timeless pieces.
What is a flat illustration?
What can you include on a flat illustration?
- A flat illustration is a 2D drawing of a garment that is not on a model. You can put in your colour pallet, use materials, draw the back as well as the front of the garment and also you can draw close ups of the garment.
What is up-cycling, customised clothing?
What could be done to a garment to customise/ up-cycle it?
Why do shops up-cycle clothing?
Give an example of three shops/ web-sites that sell up-cycled clothing.
- Up-cycling means reinventing an item of clothing. This could mean to improve or modernise the item of clothing bringing it in line with current trends. This could be done by customising the item.
- To Up-cycle a garment you could; add buttons, add pockets, cut into it, dye it and print on it.
- Shops up-cycle clothing because of lack of idea's and to insure that their clothing lines remain different to competitors.
- Junk, Topshop and H&M

Describe punk fashion.
Describe make do and mend fashion.
Which style do you prefer and why?
-Punk is a fashion trend which was born in the 1970s. It is unique and eye catching much like other fashion trends, however it is more about self expression and being rebellious. There are various styles of punk but it mainly consists of leather, chains, safety pins, studs, black, ripped clothing, bold eye make up, big or messy hair, tattoos, piercings, tight clothing, revealing clothing, spikes etc.. Vivienne Westwood one of the worlds most well known fashion designers is famous for modernising punk. Many bands including Sex Pistols and The Clash influenced punk in their own different styles including anarcho-punk, gothic & horror punk, psychobilly, street punk, glam punk and Celtic punk. Make do and mend is a fashion trend which dominated the 1940s. It was due to WWII rationing that this style began, people re-made their clothes by re-using material from old clothes, curtains and blankets. Old jumpers were unravelled and re-knitted to create new garments and bed sheets & sacks were used to make cots for baby's. It was one of the lowest points in fashion but also one of the most creative. Also men's clothes including shirt and trousers were used to produce clothing for women. I prefer punk to make do and mend because although make do and mend is creative and can even be done now, punk is a fashion trend I believe will never die out and will continue to expand in range. I like how punk is also more commonly worn today for people who don't even realise they are wearing it. It could be a leather studded jacket or a pair of ripped jeans, these are both influenced by punk. However, make do and mend is good for people who prefer the less is more look and for people who have a good eye for creating clothing.
Clothes Show Live Personal Statement
For the clothes show live competition we were asked to
create a party outfit by customizing a garment for Pretty Nostalgic. Pretty
Nostalgic means exuberant, colourful over the top and vintage patterns so I
based my decade and theme on 1980s Versace fashion. I chose Versace because I
was interested in the print and colours that were used on his clothing and it
is something different to the obvious choices of punk or hippie, however I
found while researching hippie and punk were also included in some of his
designs.
After researching and designing I came up with my own
design to customize my garment with I chose to use a plain black pencil skirt
as my garment and used the front to design on. I used yellow, orange, white and
red paint for the stair like pattern and the swirls patterns, but also stuck on
some flowers which I cut out of some blue and gold vintage material also
placing Gold diamantes in the middle of a few of them. Applying the paint to
the skirt was the most difficult as it sunk into the material so I had to put
card between the gap of the skirt to keep the paint on the material, also I had
to do quite a few layers of paint.
My garment matched my theme by the bright colours I used
and also the patterns which were similar to and inspired by Versace’s work. If
I could make my garment again I would change the garment I used, instead of
using a skirt I would have customized a shirt as I think it would be a more
interesting garment to design and perhaps more challenging.
Written Statement
My outfit will be worn to a night out party with 1980’s R&B music on. I got my garment for £5 from west coast. Materials I used on the garment including the flowers and petals cut out of materials I found in a box full of different fabrics, diamantes which I bought for 75p and paint which I had already at home. Altogether it costs me under £6 to make.
My ambition is to achieve the best grades I can get in my course in college, continue the fashion pathway in university, also possibly an art course and hopefully become either a pattern cutter or a textiles teacher.

I think my garment is in fashion now because although it is vintage by the patterned flowers i used, it has a modern twist to it with the yellow stairs effect which i painted on. Also a lot of the patterns, colours and even the garment itself is in fashion at the moment.

Peer Assessment
Three points where you have been successful are:
- Colourful and included alot of images and paint as well to show ability with medias.
- Really good and appropriate colour.
- Consistant palette and included annotations.
Two points i think you could develop and extend are:
- Need to add materials (fabrics) to moodboard.
- Be more experimental when using fabrics.
