My Top Four Favourite Circus Fashion Designers
1. Galliano 1997 Circus Collection
I have chosen Galliano's Circus Collection as my number 1 favourite circus inspired fashion because i think he has put a twist on the garments, as some of them you would find people in the circus wearing but some are garments that anyone could wear that have the colours and print of the circus.
2. Desigual Cirque du Soleil
I have chosen Cirque du Soleil as my second favourite circus inspired fashion because the bright exuberant colours and variety of patterns remind me alot of the circus and give you a feel of the atmosphere of actually being in the circus. Their garments are sold online and in shops at prices from £70+.
3. Bauhaus triadic ballet
I have chosen Bauhaus triadic ballet as my third favourite circus inspired fashion because the shapes and patterns remind me of the circus, however there is not very much colour. It also shows a more gentle side of the circus . It is different to the other collections as it is more costume than it is of actual garments. Also it is very old fashioned circus rather than modern.
4. Elsa Schiaparrelli Circus Collection
I have chosen Elsa Schiaparelli's Circus Collection as my least favourite circus inspired fashion because alothought the print on the clothes are circus inspired the garment itself is not circus inspired. However, you could disagree and say it is the gentle side of the circus like Bauhaus but i think it is more coture and delicate.

Research
- This image was taken from cirque du soleil, I chose this image because i liked the different colours and also the cuts in the sleeves of the costumes.
- These images were taken from Manish Arora Spring 2009 collection showing in India, the carousel dress is my favourite because it shows how imaginative and creative the designer is. The dress is unique and different to other circus designer garments. Also, the top of the gold dress reminds me of a ballerina skirt which you would find in the circus.
- This is Alexander McQueen - Autumn/Winter 2001 & Spring/Summer 2002 video. I chose this video because it shows the more dark and Gothic side of the circus but also the more fashionable side.
- These images are taken from the New Shanghai Circus. I chose these images because they are bright and colourful, the colours they have put together on the different costumes are contrasting. Also i think their acts are more extreme and different to other circuses.
- This is Maggie Barry Spring 2009 Victorian Circus Fashion Show video. I chose this video because it shows the more fun and sexy side of the circus, it is also shows what my idea of a real circus would be like
- These are some images i have chosen that represent my colour pallette and theme of my circus cabaret project.
- These are some circus hair and makeup images i think will suit my theme best, i like the bold make up with a simple up do, also using my colour theme.
Q&A?
1) What is research used for?
- Research is used for gathering information about a topic from a source, e.g reserching about the circus by using the internet. This information gives you a better understanding and builds a clearer picture in your mind about the topic.
2) Describe what a source is?
- A source is where your research originates from, e.g museum, book etc. There are two types of sources which are primary and secondary sources.
3) What is a primary source?
- A primary source means getting the information by yourself or from your own knowledge. Some exmples of primary sources are:
- Pictures you have catured.
- Videos you have recorded.
- Information from a book/text you have put in your own words.
- Going to a gallery and drawing your on picture of a famous painting.
- Designing your own garment based on 1980s punk fashion.
- Creating a mind map using information from the internet/books.
- Using photographs you have taken to then write about.
4) What is a secondary source?
- A secondary source means using information from other sources. Some examples of secondary sources are:
- Pictures
- Videos
- Books
- Internet
- Autobiographies
- Letters
- Diaries
- Speeches
- Interviews
- E-mails
5) Are primary sources better then secondary sources?
- I think primary sources are better than secondary sources because using primary you are getting all the information and re-creating it yourself which gives you a better understanding. However, secondary sources can also be useful for some people who find copying information better and more easier to understand.

- E.g. creating the back piece of a skirt. You would fold your material over, draw around the pattern outline and then cut where the fold is . This creates two back pieces of your skirt.
7) What does S.A stand for?
- Seam Allowance.
8) What does H.A stand for?

It is important so you can make yourself known, and people have an idea who you are and what you do. Also to work together with other people. People will bring you opportunitys that you wouldnt be able to get on your own.
8) What makes a good logo?
- Simple/Minilmalistic.
9) Why does a logo need to be simple?
- Memorable/Recognisable.
10) Why make a logo so you can remember it?
- Popular/Get more buiseness.
Catwalk Circus Couture
I have chosen my theme to be catwalk fashion because i like the idea of over the top, extravagant, garments yet displayed in an elegant way. In this project i have researched a number of different designers and artists such as; Kandinsky, Elsa Schiaparelli,
Circus de soleil, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Manish Arora ect I have concentrated on the designers who's work i think suit my theme best. After researching I began to create my moodboard and fabric board giving me idea's for my final design, however i did not like my first theme pretty acrobats so i have now changed it to catwalk circus couture. I started to sample some of the work of my two favourite designers, which meant picking out parts of their garments i found the most useful and interesting and creating my own example of it. Also, i produced toiles as practice to show me how to create different garments. I then drew several designs which i have combined together to create my final design.
McQueen v Galliano?
During
my sampling i concentrated only on both designers Alexander McQueen and John
Galliano because i find their
work different and unique compared to any other designer. Both designers work
are very over the top and mainly catwalk fashion, but i also think some pieces
McQueen has created could be wearable e.g. his wedding dresses. I think
Galliano's work is quite dramatic, over the top, theatre looks but combined
with a subtle wearable look like his his 2010 spring ready-to-wear collection. Both designers design Haute Couture, but putting their own individual stamp on it. However he also pulls off the more fairytale, barbie haute couture look still
sometimes putting a twist on them. Overall, both designers are fantastic and
think outside the box which i think is what more designers need to do.

Manish Arora
Manish Arora is an Indian fashion designer based in New Delhi. I looked mainly at his collection in his spring/summer 2009 collection which was circus inspired. His work in that showed the more clown and acrobat side of the circus compared to McQueen and Galliano, his work is quite straight to the point and literal. For example the carousel dress shown in the 2009 collection which is my favourite garment by him, is completely literal and unique. Also the fashion show was held in Paris at Cirque d'Hiver Bouglione which is a famous venue for circuses.

I also made my own print inspired by the carousel dress. I used string and paint to design it, using the striped pattern i could see on this dress i created tent like images and also using string to create the poles the horses would be held on by.
Elsa Schiaparelli
Elsa Schiaparelli was an Italian fashion designer. She is one of the worlds most inspiring and legendary figures in fashion, also she created the colour hot pink. Her work is mainly Haute Couture, however her 1938 circus collection puts a twist on that. I did not enjoy researching on her as much as i did with other designers/artists because i found her work to be very dull and too pretty. I think she can be imaginative with her work but it is still very plain. Her best piece i think from her circus collection is the falling acrobat jacket, i think it is very different and interesting but also has a very pretty nostalgic look to it. The acrobat buttons and blue horses really show how she incorporated the circus theme in to her couture look.
I have created my own print inspired by the jacket using coloured paper, felt, fabric, paint and colouring pencils. I used the collage technique on the horse to make it stand out by creating a different texture on it.
Christian Dior Museum
- The garments and accessories at the Christian Dior museum were very different in various ways to the high street clothes from my shop report.

Weekly Diary
Toiles
- Is a sample of a finished garment made in cheap material e.g.cotton, so that the design and pattern can be tested. I made toiles of various garments such as a top, trousers and skirt.
Skirt
- I began by drawing the pattern of the skirt using fabric chalk and then cutting the skirt out of cotton using a block pattern. A block pattern is like a template made out of paper or cardbord used for making garments. The back of the skirt has two panels whereas the front has one big one.
- Finally I sew the back panels on to either side of the front skirt, then sewing together the back two panels however leaving a gap for a zip or a velcro strap.
Top
- Again i started by cutting out the pattern of the front of the top using a block pattern. I then marked the seams at the back of the front of the top using the drill to cut the holes in the block pattern then marking them on to the material using fabric chalk. After that i pinned and folded the two middle seams together.
- I then cut out the back of the top using the block pattern, marking the seams and pinning and folding the middle two again.
- From the top of a seam on the front of the top i then sew down to wear i pinned them together and then finally down towards the last seam marking, this creates a seam line. I did this on both sets of seam markings on the front and back of the top.
- Finally i sew the back and front panels of the top together, leaving the arm holes, neck hole and bottom unsewn. Also again leaving another gap for a zip or a velcro strap. I found the top most hardest to make, i struggled measuring and sewing together the right sides together.
Christian Dior Museum
- The garments and accessories at the Christian Dior museum were very different in various ways to the high street clothes from my shop report.
The dior dresses have a very vintage look and also they are mainly haute couture. I noticed that many of them were long and sleek, however there was a few shorter dresses. I liked some of the dresses especially in the last two pictures, again the long, chic dresses caught my eye. These dresses are very different to high street shop dresses because because of the different shape and look of the dresses, most of the dresses are quite simple looking and covered. However, high street dresses can be quite revealing. The dior dresses look like they are quite old, but some of them have a modern look about them e.g. the pink dress in the first picture. Althpugh, the prints from some of the dresses you would find on high street dresses. It is no question that the dior dresses are classic haute couture.
- The jackets and tops from the museum were i found to be bit more modern tn the dresses. You could find similar prints and patterns to these garments in high street shops. For example the kimono jacket has come back into fashion and i have seen a few with a similar pattern to the red and green kimono in the picture, there is one shown below.
- The colour, print and cut on these two kimono's are very similar as they are both red, both floral and both have a very thick border around of them. However. they differ because i think the christian dior kimono has very vintage and rare print and the high street kimono has a fringe.
- Throughout the museum i found there were alot more hats then any other garment. The hats are very haute couture, high street shops also have similar hats to some of these. They are very pretty and some will always stay in fashion.
- The dior shoes are extremely haute couture, these shoes you would definately find in high street shops.
- Finally, this dress i found to be the most exquisite garment in the museum. The colour and spikes can be seen as modern and is alot more different to the other dresses there, this however could not be found in a high street shop but perhaps something with a simlar look to it.
What is Haute Couture?
- Haute Couture is french, for "high dressmaking". It is the production of custom-fitted clothing and it is also handmade. Designers such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Givenchy, Elie Saab ect. Haute Couture is also very pretty and elegant.
Samples
- This is a sample i have done inspired by a dress in Alexander McQueen Autumn/Winter 2012. Almost all garments in this collection include the fluffy like ball at the bottom of this dress which is why i focused on that aspect of the dress in particular. I sampled this part of the dress because it reminded me alot of a clowns nose which relates to the circus, i scrunched and pinned bits of fabric together to create this sample. I think because it is not a perfect circle, it is quite twisted and curvy, it shows that the circus is full of twists and different exciting acts.
- This sample was inspired by this fairytale dress by John Galliano shown in the Dior 2011 Haute Couture show. I focused on the the tight corset type top of the dress because i love the detail flowers of it, very much like the flower on a clowns hat. This also could be seen as the more elegant and pretty side of the circus/.
- This, again it could relate to the circus showing the more pretty and calm side of the circus, the bow representing elegance.
- This is one of my favourite dresses by my Alexander McQueen. It is from his 1999 spring/summer collection i love how original and different it is, much like the circus which has some amazing, unique acts. I focused on the whole dress itself by splattering different colours on to white cotton, then finishing by pinning the dress at the back.
- This was a sample which i was inspired by through this red layered coat, its ruffled layers remind me of the ruffles which sometimes cover the bottom of stilt act trousers. Also the colour red is one of the typical circus colours.
Interview
Me - What year were you born?
Brother - I was born in the early 1980s, in 1982.
Me - What type of clothes did you wear?
Brother - I wore Jeans, T-shirts, Caps, Shellsuits.
Me -What type of music did you listen to?
Brother - i listened to westlife, backstreet boys, micheal jackson.
Me - What celebritys did you look up to?
Brother - None really but i did admire micheal jackson's music alot.
Me - What was high school like?
Brother - School was layed back, they were not too bothered about uniforms.
I now have printed on the front and back of the dress using the designs i sampled from my research in textiles, i used the polystyrene print block and the cholygraphic print block to do this. I used purple, light blue and dark blue paint to print with. The dark blue being the top layer to make the cholygraphic print more bold. I also printed on some of the flower petals to make the dress look more effective and to link it all together. So far i really like my dress the print and colours are exactly how i imagined it, however i am unsure on how the final piece will turn out.
I have now added more flowers on to my garment which was inspired by another of John Galliano dresses, i also sampled his fairytale dress which i have shown in my blog. I have also started adding gold and purple layered pieces on to the skirt of my dress. I attached calico on the back of my pieces to make them more bigger and 3D. I am unsure on how i should make the skirt of my dress as either a peplum or floor length gown.
I tryed a few different styles of layering but found that i did not like any of them, i am reconsidering layering because i think the dress is too fragile and light, it will not be able to carry the layers.
These are boards we produced in contextual studies which explain what we need to oraganise a photoshoot. We wrote down our answers and displayed pictures we cut out from magazines linked to our answers next to them. Some of the answers we came up with were; a model, a photographer, a camera, a location and accessories.
In contextual studies this week we planned out our photoshoot and the running order for our catwalk show. We started off by splitting into two groups. Our group decided that our time frame for the photoshoot would be 30minutes, so we then created a 5minute timeline down the side of our plan sheet having something done in each time slot. After we had finished we realised that half an hour would not be long enough for the shoot as it would take longer to get prpared and the photoshoot itself would be rushed. It would actually take us an hour minimum.
Next, we began to plan our catwalk running order. Our group first decided that we wanted it to be mixed up, starting with a happy clown themed garment to then a dark gothic themed garment to then going back to happy clown. Then both groups joined together and discussed idea's, we found that the other groups idea worked better which was to start with happy clown themed garments then subtly going into the dark gothic themed garments. Also starting and ending with an unexpected, extravagant piece. After alot of discussion, we came to a final running order which best suited everyone.
This week in contextual studies we had a meeting with the second years to discuss the show as we are all going to be doing it together. Sualiah was the head of the meeting and organised it very well. We discussed the running order which we kept to the theme of happy clown to dark gothic also adding the year 2's into this order, we decided to split into 3 groups which are; the starting group that begins with happy bright colours, to then group 2 which consists of purples and blues and finally ending with group 3 which is dark coloured gothic chic garments. We then discussed the different roles we will all have on the night including choreographer and running order organisers, also we discussed the timing of each garment being modelled on the catwalk and found that it would take approximately 30 seconds or less for each garment. Finally we discussed music, Sualiah picked a member of each group to pick one song to be played throughout their group catwalk.

After that we will being the shoot first with a few practice shots then going on to the real thing, this will take 30/35minutes. Finally after that i will get the photographer to send me the photo's straight away.
This is my photoshoot plan board. It includes my garment, hair & make-up, location and colour pallette. I made this to show my photographer, model and hair & make-up artist to give an idea of my theme for the photoshoot and catwalk.
